Many of the famous carvers of the time supplied Philadelphia Toboggan
Company (PTC) with horses, for $25 to $35 per horse.
A sash type saddle blanket decorates this gray horse.
Many of the features match those of Charles Carmel.
Carmel used imaginative decorations, in addition to being able to capture
the essence of an animal in the expression; proportions and flow of the mane, circa 1915.

From PJ's Carousel Park Collection, this stander rode on PTC #36
in the Seabreeze Amusement Park in Rochester, NY.
The carousel was destroyed by fire in 1994 but rebuilt and in operation today. Very few of the horses are still ‘alive’ and I don't believe this horse still exists.

This outstanding piece is from the PJs Carousel Collection of Newbern, Virginia.
The horse is “Silver” and is the 25th Anniversary Special and
is so noted by a silver-colored plaque on the wooden base which reads
"SILVER - P.T.C. 25th Anniversary Special, P.J.'s Carousel Collection."
This horse is signed by M.G. Phelps and dated 1985.
It is mounted on a walnut base.
This piece is a substantial 15" tall and 16" wide.
Beautifully detailed and moulded from gemwood.

Torch is the lead horse on PTC #44 Carousel at Paramount's Kings Dominion,
located in Doswell, Virginia.
This carousel was built in 1917 and still operates today.
Torch is a magnificant animal carrying a torch to light the way. A true leader with a Lion shield and a pouch of arrows.

This one is one of the larger ones and is from a series that was done of horses that were actually on working carousels. This brown beauty is from the carousel at Paramount's King's Dominion in Virginia and is a PTC jumper. Dark brown in color, he sports white trappings trimmed in two tone blue, gold, and brick red. A quiver of arrows adorns the back of the saddles. Michelle Phelps was the signature artist.

It is 12" tall, and 10" long.
The Zebra colors are black and white on the body. The saddle, breast collar and bridle are slate blue, red, and trimmed in gold. Also as a red rose with black and gold leafs.
