The master artists of Lenox have re-created this fabled jumper, The Carousel Charger.  A magical white horse with the lavish detail of the hand-carved works of the carousel masters of days gone by, works that are prized by major museums and galleries.  Only the artists of Lenox could so enrich the great carousel tradition - with unparalleled porcelain artistry in the Lenox tradition.  For The Carousel Charger has been intricately sculptured to capture the sleek, graceful lines and luxuriant mane of a truly beautiful carousel horse.  And he is bedecked with the most exquisite trappings.  Look at the incredible, handcrafted detail - the tiny beads and fringes of his bridle, the perfectly defined tassels on his saddle and tail.  The delicate laurel pattern scrolled across his chest.  Most of all, the sun shield - a work of art all its own, with its complex border and layer upon layer of rays that glimmer like a jewel in hand-applied 24 karat gold.  And because elaborate, bright trappings were essential to the wonderful fantasy of carousel art, the hand painting is incredibly exacting.

To enhance its importance as a display piece, it is mounted on a golden carousel pole with a polished hardwood display base.½ Handcrafted, hand-painted porcelain and 24 karat gold with a hardwood base.  Introduced: 1990; Height: 8"; Retail: $156.00.
Reportedly, production on the Lenox Carousel Horse Charger ended on Dec. 31,2001.

Patriotism was a natural theme for carousel art and the immigrants carvers. Eye-catching red, white and blue colors, golden shields and intricately carved eagles made the horses that bore them favorites on the carousels that flourished in America from around 1890 until the 1930's.
The patriotic theme was depicted on the finest original carousels, including those of Daniel Muller and The Herschell-Spillman Co. The trappings of these horses featured American flags, bunting with white stars on blue fields and stripes of red and white, and such beloved American symbols as the eagle.
Original patriotic horses are prized by collectors of carousel art. As is the case with all the more unusual designs, few of these proud steeds are found on carousels operating today.

In the Golden Age of the carousel, the master carvers such as Daniel Muller, Gustav Dentzel, Salvatore Cerigliaro, Charles Looff and John Zalar vied with one another to see who could create the most dramatic, elaborately carved and fancifully decorated carousel horses.
Some of the horses were rare and festive creatures who were festooned with mystical decorations.
This was the inspiration for the Celestial Carousel Horse.  A creature of pure enchantment, sculpured with the same exquisite attention to detail as its turn-of-the-century predecessors.  Richly emblazoned with a glowing sun, twinkling stars and magical moons.
The Celestial Carousel Horse is meticulously painted by hand and lavishly adorned with hand-applied 24 K gold and precious platinum.

One of the rarest carousel animals was inspired by the mythological seahorse known as the hippocampus.  This fantastical creature gets its name from the Greek for horse (hippo) and fish (campus).

The hippocampus features the swirling, twisted mane of a horse and the curved tail of a leaping fish.  So few hippocampus figures were carved during the Golden Age of the carousel, that only 5 originals exist today... one of which rides on a carousel in Kit Carson County in Burlington, Colorado.

Carved by the Pennsylvania Toboggan Company in the early 1900s, the Burlington carousel is a three-row machine with 46 animals.  Considered a “menagerie” carousel, it features many different animals - lions, tigers, dogs, donkeys, giraffes, horses and a prized hippocampus.

This Ocean Fantasy Carousel Seahorse is a magnificent sculpture that pays homage to this unique carousel animal and to the talented carvers who first brought the myth to life.

Carousel artists of old were fascinated with exotic animals.  In homage, the artists of Lenox have selected a relative of the camel from South America to portray as an imaginative carousel sculpture.  The Carousel Llama depicts a llama with a proud stance, large ears, and camel-like snout.  A blanket with geometric designs evoking native weaving adorns the llama's back.  The ornate saddlery is inspired by indigenous art of the Andes.  And a lavish chest medallion hangs from a brilliant beaded collar.

When it comes to carousel animals, visions of horses, tigers and elephants come to mind. But less traditional animals - such as the seahorse, buffalo and goat - were stars in the elaborate carousels of years gone by. The Carousel Goat brings the past to life with the same attention to detail lavished on the life-sized original that served as its inspiration. From its commanding horns to its curved tail, this sculpture is pure genius.

In the 1860s, Americans couldn't get enough of the carousel that Gustav Dentzel brought with him from Germany. But it is Dentzel's woodcarvings and innovative carousel designs that art collectors treasure most today. One such masterpiece is an original Dentzel carousel zebra, circa 1886-1902, on permanent display at the Smithsonian Institution. The artists of Lenox have re-created this historic work in a limited edition sculpture. In true Dentzel style, this zebra is powerful and realistic.

Carousel chariots featured seats, so that those unable to sit astride a horse could still enjoy the fun and thrill of a carousel ride. Lenox presents its first-ever carousel chariot sculpture. The Carousel Swan Chariot was inspired by the lavish swan chariots created during the Carousel's Golden Age. The swan's head bends forward in a graceful arc, while its wings form the sides of the two-person seat. A breastplate of sculpted roses decorates the front of the chariot, and extends to the sides.
