Original work of art created exclusively for the Lenox Carousel Collection.
Fine bisque porcelain, hand painted and embellished with 24 carat gold.
Approx. 8¼" tall on gold pole and stained hardwood base. Orig. retail - $165.00 Patriotism was a natural theme for carousel art and the immigrants carvers. Eye-catching red, white and blue colors, golden shields and intricately carved eagles made the horses that bore them favorites on the carousels that flourished in America from around 1890 until the 1930's. The patriotic theme was depicted on the finest original carousels, including those of Daniel Muller and The Herschell-Spillman Co. The trappings of these horses featured American flags, bunting with white stars on blue fields and stripes of red and white, and such beloved American symbols as the eagle. Original patriotic horses are prized by collectors of carousel art. As is the case with all the more unusual designs, few of these proud steeds are found on carousels operating today. |

In the Golden Age of the carousel, the master carvers such as Daniel Muller,
Gustav Dentzel, Salvatore Cerigliaro, Charles Looff and John Zalar vied
with one another to see who could create the most dramatic, elaborately
carved and fancifully decorated carousel horses.
Some of the horses were rare and festive creatures who were festooned with mystical decorations. This was the inspiration for the Celestial Carousel Horse. A creature of pure enchantment, sculpured with the same exquisite attention to detail as its turn-of-the-century predecessors. Richly emblazoned with a glowing sun, twinkling stars and magical moons. The Celestial Carousel Horse is meticulously painted by hand and lavishly adorned with hand-applied 24 K gold and precious platinum. |

One of the rarest carousel animals was inspired by the mythological seahorse known as the hippocampus.
This fantastical creature gets its name from the Greek for horse (hippo) and fish (campus).
The hippocampus features the swirling, twisted mane of a horse and the curved tail of a leaping fish. So few hippocampus figures were carved during the Golden Age of the carousel, that only 5 originals exist today... one of which rides on a carousel in Kit Carson County in Burlington, Colorado. Carved by the Pennsylvania Toboggan Company in the early 1900s, the Burlington carousel is a three-row machine with 46 animals. Considered a “menagerie” carousel, it features many different animals - lions, tigers, dogs, donkeys, giraffes, horses and a prized hippocampus. This Ocean Fantasy Carousel Seahorse is a magnificent sculpture that pays homage to this unique carousel animal and to the talented carvers who first brought the myth to life. |
