This is the Calliope that provides the music for the carousel. The calliopes were either steam or electric. They could just be pipes or a whole range of automated instruments in one huge case. Usually they sat to one side of the carousel and were very ornate and gilded pieces of furniture.
This calliope has its own wooden display base to stand on. It is a big decanter. The wooden base measures 9¼ by 4¾ inches and the actual decanter is 8½ inches tall by 3½ inches deep.
The decanter is red and has typical flourishes and columns and gilding of figures. The pipes and what looks like a range of cymbals show in the front. You'll notice the pipes are notched at the top. That means they are wooden pipes that can play the sounds of several different instruments such as the pipes in organs can. The bottoms of the pipes have individual little bellows to operate them.
