In the summer of 2001, Beachpebble company founder Gayle Roller purchased the molds of the Beachstone/Renaker-Brazel pottery company. Known for its high-quality, whimsical animals figurines, ornaments, and jewelry, Beachstone had closed in the mid-1980s and placed their molds in storage.
Under the expert guidance of Joan Berkwitz of Pour Horse Pottery, Gayle has been cleaning and restoring the molds and learning the pottery making process. She has now begun producing appealing ceramic collectibles. Beachpebble pieces will use unique color schemes and decoration to distinguish them from their Beachstone predecessors. This will help preserve and enhance the value of each company's items.
All of the company's products will be marketed and sold under the Beachpebble name. Because the pieces require careful attention to hand-painted detail, quantities are currently very limited.
In October 2003, the Paradise fire in California devastated the Beachpebble studio. Almost all the molds were destroyed, along with the kiln, glazes, and other supplies. Beachpebble will therefore be on indefinite hiatus during the rebuilding process. A few completed items were with the marketing representative prior to the fire, and were therefore spared from the flames. These items will be auctioned on eBay to help pay for the reconstruction costs.
